We specialized in collecting hardware to convert analogue formats for families to share with loved ones and with future generations. ![[mjl-video-office-2.png|View of the mjlvideo office workspace]] *Media memory logo:* ![[Media_Memory_play.jpg|Media Memory logo]] We digitized all videotape formats including DV, HDV, VHS, VHS-C, S-VHD, Hi-8, both to DVD and digital video files. ![[mjlvideo-flyer-2014.png|2014 promotional flyer for mjlvideo services|550]] ## Digitization of Super 8 and Single 8 We digitized 8mm reels using one of our two telecinemas, removing the joins between film reels in post-editing. Super 8 films age differently over time and can lose their original look, sometimes turning purple monochrome. We corrected this where necessary by adding a black and white filter and adjusting the contrast. *Elmo telecinema for Super 8 film digitization:* This is an Elmo projector converted to be a telecinema. The Sony A1 digital camera focuses on the internal screen, the video image is then captured direct to hard drive by the capture PC (Mac). ![[mjl-elmo-sony-telecinema.png|Elmo telecinema device for Super 8 film digitization]] *TCS Simple 8 and Super 8 Telecinema* This is a purpose-built telecinema imported from TCS in the US, with strobed illumination of the film synchronised to the film speed to avoid strobing effects. ![[mjl-tcs-super8-simple8-telecinema.png|TCS Simple 8 and Super 8 telecinema equipment]] *Sample output of Super 8 digitization*  We applied suitable correction to video outputs using filters for contrast, brightness, colour depth if the colours were bland. ## Digitzation Post Editing Generally we cleaned up the recorded video before supplying to the customer and might have added in an audio soundtrack, or voice commentary. Often this meant editing the video beforehand to produce a montage, depending on the requirement and the source. This might have been reduction editing, a photo slideshow, a souvenir edit or a compilation. We cleaned, loaded, and unloaded the slides, making sure images were straight, and corrected the output. ![[powerslide-5000-slide-scanner.jpg|Powerslide 5000 volume slide scanner with carousel]] In scanning it’s best to organize is to organize slides by similar colour profile. ![[digitizing-negatives.jpg|Process of digitizing photographic negatives - image generated by Chat GPT]] ## Image correction Colour correction of images depends on the level of quality sought and can be done frame by frame or by batch. ![[colour-correction.webp|Colour correction process for digitized images]] ## Scanning Glass Plates We transferred glass plates by rephotgraphing them on a luminous back screen and corrected contrast and exposure as necessary. ![[glass-plate.webp|Example of glass plate after being digitized]] ## Scanning Photos and Documents We scanned paper photos and adjusted them to improve or restore their colour before including in family photo libraries. Scanned images can be mixed in printed albums or animated slideshows with digital photos, glass plates images, slides, or negatives. ![[scanning.jpeg|Scanning paper photos and documents for digital archiving]] We backed up customer data to physical media or cloud services, such as OneDrive, Google Cloud, Apple cloud, USB key or external disk drives. ## DVD Duplication We duplicated DVDs for schools and theatre companies to distribute to their audiences and for public bodies with bespoke designed and printed dust jackets. ![[systor-dvd-7-draw-duplicator.jpg|Systor DVD duplicator with seven drawers]] ## Photo Reconstruction It is possible to reconstruct a severely damaged images. The example below seems to have received ink splashes in several places. We managed to remove these defects, making the photo black and white and by rebuilding pixels. ![[image-correction.png|Example of photo reconstruction and image correction]] We are not graphic designers, but we know how to use the relevant tools.
